Interview with Shelli
1. What are some key characteristics of an empowered woman?
An empowered woman is characterized by profound self-awareness, resilience, and a strong dedication to building and maintaining networks. Self-awareness allows her to understand her strengths and weaknesses, aligning her actions with her core values and goals. This clarity and introspection help her navigate life's challenges with confidence and maintain emotional balance. Resilience is essential, as it turns life's inevitable setbacks into opportunities for growth. Rather than merely enduring adversity, an empowered woman learns from each experience, emerging stronger and more prepared for future challenges. This resilience not only bolsters her own spirit but also inspires and motivates those around her.Â
Furthermore, the ability to cultivate robust networks is crucial in today’s interconnected world. Recognizing that achievements are rarely solo endeavors, she values and nurtures relationships across diverse spheres. These connections provide access to new ideas, resources, and collaborative opportunities, driving both personal and community advancement.
These traits—self-awareness, resilience, and effective networking—equip an empowered woman to lead a life of influence and inspiration, shaping not only her destiny but also making meaningful contributions to society. Through embodying these qualities, she sets a powerful example, paving the way for others and creating a legacy of empowerment.

2. In your view, what are the essential ingredients for empowering women in today's world / context?
Â
Empowering women in dynamic sectors like space and technology demands a robust approach centered on education, mentorship, and economic opportunity. In these fields, where advanced skills are crucial, providing access to STEM education and specialized training programs is essential. These opportunities equip women to not only participate but also lead in these high-tech industries. Mentorship plays a pivotal role in this empowerment landscape. Through my experiences with UNOOSA Space4Women and WomenTech Network, I've witnessed the transformative impact of mentorship in offering guidance and showcasing role models. These role models demonstrate that success is achievable and inspire women to overcome industry-specific challenges.
Economic opportunities through entrepreneurship are also vital. The integration of technology and innovation opens unprecedented avenues for creating and scaling businesses in the space industry. Platforms that connect women to resources, funding, and markets are crucial for turning innovative ideas into viable enterprises. Moreover, leveraging technology helps overcome access barriers, delivering world-class education and essential networking directly to women, regardless of location. By emphasizing these pillars—education, mentorship, and economic opportunity—we can foster an environment where women are leaders and innovators, driving progress in space exploration and technology.

3. What motivated you to get involved in being inspirational for change?
My journey to becoming an inspirational figure for change is fueled by a deep-seated passion for servant leadership, where the primary goal is serving others. This philosophy guides me to put the needs of others first, empowering and uplifting them to achieve their best potential. I have been fortunate to benefit from excellent mentorship and significant career opportunities, shaping me into the leader I am today. These experiences have instilled in me a desire to pay it forward, realizing the profound impact of supporting and guiding others—not just on individuals but on entire professional communities. Writing my third book, Out of this World Leadership, extends this commitment.
The book explores the essence of authentic leadership—leaders being true to their values, fostering trust and respect within their teams, and encouraging others to lead with courage and integrity. I aim to inspire others to embrace their unique leadership styles through the lessons I've shared. Ultimately, my motivation stems from a desire to inspire others and help them realize their dreams, creating pathways for success that others can follow. My legacy aims to show that true leadership measures success not only through personal achievements but also through the success and empowerment of others.

4. What tips do you have for leaders who want to make their workplace more inclusive?
Creating an inclusive workplace is crucial for fostering diversity and ensuring every employee can thrive. As leaders, our actions and decisions significantly impact inclusivity within our organizations. Based on my experiences, the essentials for inclusivity include robust communication, genuine collaboration, and a structured approach to listening, learning, and leading. Communication is fundamental. It involves establishing channels for all voices to be heard and respected, which includes regular feedback opportunities and informal interactions that promote open dialogue. This ensures that all team members feel valued and understood. Collaboration goes beyond simple teamwork.Â
It requires projects and roles that incorporate diverse perspectives, utilizing the unique backgrounds and skills of each team member. This not only improves the quality of work but also cultivates a culture of mutual respect and shared purpose.
My principles for fostering inclusivity are:Â
- Listening: True inclusivity starts here. It's about understanding the context and emotions behind words, being fully present, and building trust through empathy.
- Learning: Each interaction is a chance to learn. Staying open to different experiences and viewpoints allows leaders to adapt and enhance workplace inclusivity.
- Leading: Inclusive leadership involves making courageous decisions based on what we've heard and learned, advocating for necessary changes, and setting an example for others.Â
By emphasizing communication, collaboration, and my three-step approach, we create environments where everyone feels empowered to contribute their best, enhancing productivity and the organization's ability to attract and retain diverse talent.Â

5. What advice would you give to women who feel like giving up on their dreams, goals / plans?
In the journey to realize our dreams, moments of doubt are inevitable. For women at this crossroads, my advice is to rediscover your inner strength and reignite your passion. The first crucial step is to pause and reflect. Understanding the root of your discouragement—whether it's external challenges, internal fears, or a misalignment with your true passions—is essential.
Revisiting the reasons behind your goals can help transform perceived roadblocks into surmountable hurdles. From my experience in sectors like space and technology, I've witnessed the transformative power of resilience. It involves not just bouncing back, but also growing through adversity. Setting small, achievable objectives builds confidence and momentum, helping to diminish the urge to give up. Seeking support is also vital. The journey is rarely solo; the support from mentors, peers, and champions is critical. These connections can provide emotional backing and practical solutions to overcome challenges. Additionally, embrace continuous learning and adaptability. Staying informed about new technologies and strategies can open alternative paths to your goals. Remember, your journey is inspirational to others watching you navigate these challenges. If you feel like giving up, take a moment to reflect on your 'why,' seek support, and set small, manageable goals. These steps are not just about staying on track—they empower you to move forward with renewed energy and purpose, ensuring your path is one of growth and fulfillment.
